Irrigation systems are the most efficient means of delivering water to plants in a landscape at the right time. Hand watering doesn’t provide the same consistency that an adequately programmed irrigation time will. Professionally installed and maintained irrigation systems take the guesswork out of providing for various needs, from low watering needs of xeriscaped landscapes to high demand tropical planted beds.
“If you don’t give them the right irrigation, they’re going to decline or die, and then your landscape is not going to live to its fullest potential,” said Zac Fuchs, Rockaway Landscape Designer. “And that’s something that really needs to be pinpointed and specific. Say, for example, when we do an installation and we put down brand new turf. We need to adjust the irrigation controller to account for that brand-new turf because brand-new turf needs a lot more water than existing turf or shrubs that are a little bit more mature. So you have to balance that and also from a sustainability standpoint you’ve got to be careful how much water you are using because we don’t want to use too much, because then you are just wasting it.
And here in Florida, we have issues with drainage and we don’t want to use any excess water. And also drip irrigation is another thing that we really utilize down here, especially in Florida, because it barely uses any water. It also gives the plants what they need, and that’s something that’s a little bit more high-tech that we are getting people used to, and the more traditional rotors and spray heads we are moving away from that to the more efficient water-saving technologies.”
