The experienced team at Rockaway creates custom outdoor living spaces, landscape and hardscape designs with lighting, smart irrigation & water management systems, and loves working with clients to incorporate swimming pool landscaping ideas into the perfect design to bring our combined vision to life.
“My husband and I were looking to kind of play off our existing landscaping in the front,” said Homeowner, Lindsey Pearson. “Lots of birds of paradise, tropical plants, and kind of tie that to our backyard.” After installing a swimming pool, the Pearsons decided to work with Rockaway Landscape Designer David Holloway to develop this beautiful backyard landscaping.
Tropical plants in their front yard that were used in the back included slow-growing Chinese fan palms, white and orange flowering birds of paradise, and Florida native silver palmettos. Also included in the pool landscape design are Queen palms, Paurotis Everglades palms, Foxtail ferns, Split Leaf philodendron, Blue daze, Plumbago, and Regal Shield Alocasia all planted by the landscaping crew of Alex, Dre, and Tony. Coquina boulders were also included to enhance the tropical appeal of the landscape, plus pine straw as ground cover.
Florida’s beach communities strive to protect against stormwater runoff pollution. The Atlantic Beach local jurisdiction is no exception and requires the creation of drainage holding areas for projects over 250 square feet. Thus, based on the size of the new swimming pool two swales were included. One of the swales was covered with grassy turf and the second with #89 limestone rock. Although grass and gravel are permitted in swales other plants are not. However, these drainage holding areas can be adapted for other purposes. “We wanted to install a little gravel fire pit area here,” said Pearson. “We have a full list of things we do plan to put in here and just expand our outdoor living space for entertaining. We’ve got lots of little kids in the family. Some grassy area over there for them to run around and play on, but then also kind of minimize our upkeep here in the backyard.”
Downspouts that channel rainwater from roofs to gutters can also be piped into these drainage holding areas. Rockaway can provide various drainage solutions to accommodate residential and commercial needs that meet the regulatory requirements of municipalities throughout Jacksonville and the beaches of Northeast Florida.
The new backyard landscape provided the perfect opportunity to upgrade the irrigation system with a new automated drip line zone and two new spray zones. Our Irrigation & Production Specialist, Dares, repaired wiring for the irrigation system, added new valves where necessary, replaced broken valves, and repaired damaged water lines. Irrigation system settings were verified and tested to ensure all landscape areas receive adequate sprinkler coverage at the appropriate time of day for the health of the plants.
“David really worked with us well and listened to us and what we were looking for and then was able to incorporate that into a great design for our backyard,” said Pearson. “We’re super happy with how everything has turned out. The installation and everything was also very smooth from start to finish. The guys were great. When we had little things we wanted to tweak or move around they were very responsive and did it right away. I truly have no complaints. Would 10 out of 10 recommend and do it all over again.”
