When you own coastal property, erosion, and storm surge are a big concern, which this newly installed Ponte Vedra Beach Dune Garden helps control. Landscape Designer David Holloway walks us through the property in this video, where Rockaway planted over 7000 Asiatic jasmine for beautification and erosion control on the dunes that tower over the home. The homeowner did his cleanout of the underbrush and pruning of the nearly 100 palms on the dunes. Then, several Rockaway landscaping installation crews scaled and rappeled the steep dunes, planting thousands of Asiatic Jasmine and spreading cypress mulch.
Coastal dunes serve several essential purposes along our Florida coastlines, including:
1. Coastal Protection: Dunes are a natural buffer against coastal erosion and storm surges. They absorb wave energy and protect the land behind them from the destructive forces of intense storms.
2. Habitat for Flora and Fauna: Dunes provide a unique ecosystem for various plant and animal species. They offer a suitable habitat for specially adapted dune plants, insects, birds, and even small mammals. These species often contribute to the biodiversity of the surrounding coastal region.
3. Sand Storage: Dunes act as natural reservoirs for sand, replenishing beaches during regular erosion cycles. Without dunes, coastal erosion could accelerate, leading to the loss of beach areas.
4. Groundwater Recharge: Dunes can play a role in recharging groundwater. As sand filters rainwater, it percolates through the dunes, helping replenish coastal aquifers and maintain a healthy water balance in coastal ecosystems.
5. Environmental Tourism: Coastal dunes are often a popular attraction for visitors along our Florida coastlines. They provide scenic beauty and a peaceful environment for outdoor enthusiasts. Protecting and maintaining coastal dunes is essential to safeguard their crucial functions and the associated ecosystems.
