From Winter Damage to a Tropical Landscape Upgrade in Sawgrass Country Club

Summary

This Sawgrass Country Club project in Little Bay Harbor transformed a winter-damaged landscape into a refreshed tropical outdoor space featuring improved grading, drainage installation, angled paver patios, shell pathways, and a durable coastal plant palette.

This Little Bay Harbor residence in Sawgrass Country Club underwent a comprehensive front- and backyard landscape renovation designed to elevate and modernize its tropical character.
Following one of the harshest winters in recent memory, significant plant dieback created the opportunity for a full refresh. The project began with a complete tear-out of the existing perimeter beds surrounding the home and garage. From there, our team regraded portions of the property, removed tree stumps, and installed a new drainage line to improve long-term performance before any hardscape or planting work began. Hardscape Enhancements To enhance functionality and flow, we installed two new angled paver patios—one at the front entry and another at the rear garage entrance. These additions provide clean transitions between the home and landscape while increasing usable outdoor space. A step-stone walkway bordered with clean shell connects the front patio and side entrance, creating visual continuity and a coastal aesthetic. Shell was also placed around the base of the central shade tree, defining the space between this residence and the neighboring unit while maintaining a low-maintenance finish. Tropical Planting Design The refreshed beds incorporate coquina boulders as natural focal points and soft borders, reinforcing the coastal character of the property. Plant selections were carefully chosen for durability, texture, and visual interest, including:
  • Pygmy date palms
  • Shell ginger
  • Apostle iris
  • Coontie palms
  • Fountain grasses
  • Bird of paradise
  • Crinum lilies
  • Bottlebrush
  • Red ti plants
  • Foxtail ferns
A key priority for the homeowner was ensuring plant material was properly spaced away from the structure—both along sidewalls and under roof overhangs—to allow for healthy growth without obstructing windows, views, or natural light over time. Low-maintenance performance was equally important, and each selection was made with long-term sustainability in mind. Communication & Client Collaboration Although the homeowner was not onsite during construction, she remained closely involved through daily progress updates. This allowed for thoughtful adjustments throughout installation, ensuring the finished landscape aligned perfectly with her vision. While many Ponte Vedra Beach homeowners are now addressing winter damage, this property is already ahead—transformed into a refreshed, resilient outdoor living space designed for beauty and longevity.
