Fairway-Focused Backyard Transformation

Summary

A full backyard reset at Atlantic Beach Country Club transformed an outdated space into a clean, functional outdoor living area built around the golf course view. With structured pavers, flowing artificial turf, sable palms, and layered plantings, every element works together to create a cohesive, low-maintenance space designed for year-round enjoyment.

Designing Outdoor Living That Belongs on the Course

At Atlantic Beach Country Club, the setting already does something most backyards can’t. Open fairways, long sightlines, and coastal light create a natural backdrop that deserves more than an afterthought. But having a great view doesn’t automatically create a great outdoor space. This project was about bringing the landscape up to the level of its surroundings, removing what no longer worked, rebuilding with intention, and creating a backyard that feels like it truly belongs along the course.

The transformation began with a complete reset. The existing yard had become fragmented over time, with aging sod and plant material that no longer complemented the home or the setting. Rather than working around those limitations, most everything was removed. This allowed the space to be regraded, rethought, and rebuilt from the ground up. Starting fresh created the opportunity to design not just for appearance, but for long-term performance and usability.

From there, the focus shifted to structure. The foundation of the new design centered around a series of paver areas, carefully positioned to define how the space would be used. These weren’t just patios—they established purpose. Each pad was built on a properly compacted base, with wall block borders installed and secured to create clean, lasting edges. The layout began to take shape through these defined zones, giving the backyard a sense of organization and intention that hadn’t existed before.

Connecting those spaces was one of the most important elements of the project. Instead of rigid lines, artificial turf was installed with smooth, flowing curves that guide movement naturally throughout the yard. This approach softens the transitions between hardscape and planting areas while maintaining a clean, polished look. Beyond aesthetics, the turf provides a durable, low-maintenance surface that performs consistently year-round—an ideal solution for a highly visible backyard along the golf course. It acts as the visual and functional link that ties the entire design together.

With the structure and flow established, the landscape itself could come back to life. Three large sable palms were installed to anchor the space, adding vertical scale without obstructing the view. Their placement was deliberate, framing key sightlines while reinforcing the coastal character of the property. Around them, layers of new plant material were introduced to bring color, depth, and contrast into the design. Each planting decision was made with balance in mind—enhancing the space without overwhelming it, and ensuring it would mature gracefully over time.

As the project moved toward completion, the finishing details elevated the entire space. Lighting was installed to extend usability into the evening hours, highlighting textures and creating atmosphere after sunset. White river rock added contrast and clarity to planting beds while helping reduce maintenance. A drip irrigation system ensured that the new landscape would remain healthy and efficient, delivering water where it’s needed without waste. The paver areas were locked in with poly sand, and the turf was finished with infill and power brushing, creating a consistent, natural appearance across the surface.

What makes this project stand out isn’t any single feature—it’s how everything works together. The paver areas establish purpose, the turf creates flow, the palms provide structure, and the plantings bring the space to life. Every element supports the same goal: to enhance the experience of being outside without competing with the golf course beyond.

By early Spring, the transformation was complete. What was once an underutilized backyard is now a space designed to be lived in—whether that means a quiet morning, time with family, or simply enjoying the view. The result is a landscape that feels intentional, cohesive, and lasting. Most importantly, it’s a space the homeowner is proud of and excited to use.

Great outdoor spaces don’t happen by accident. They’re built through thoughtful design, proper execution, and an understanding of how each element contributes to the whole. This project is a clear example of what happens when all of those pieces come together.
