1. Firebush

Landscape tip: Don’t squeeze firebush into a space requiring constant shearing. Giving it room to flower naturally generally provides greater ornamental and pollinator value.
2. Native Milkweed
Few plants illustrate the difference between a nectar plant and host plant better than milkweed. Adult monarch butterflies visit many flowers for nectar, but monarch caterpillars depend on milkweeds as their host plants.

Florida native scarlet sage is one option particularly relevant to the region. Salvias also provide an upright flowering form that contrasts nicely with rounded shrubs and spreading groundcovers.
Landscape tip: Consider bloom form as part of the design. Pollinator gardens can use repetition, layering and contrasting plant shapes rather than looking like random collections of flowers.
4. Porterweed
Porterweed is well known for attracting butterflies. Its small flowers appear along elongated spikes, providing a distinctive appearance and warm-season nectar.
But exact selection matters. Native and non-native porterweeds occur in Florida horticulture, and they shouldn’t automatically be treated as ecologically equivalent.

What Flowers Attract Hummingbirds in Florida?
Hummingbirds frequently investigate brightly colored tubular flowers. That’s one reason firebush, coral honeysuckle and red-flowering salvias can be valuable additions to a Northeast Florida hummingbird garden.
