But there’s an important distinction:

Native to Florida does not mean appropriate for every Florida yard.

A plant native to a wetland isn’t automatically a good choice for a dry sandy bed. A native plant that thrives in full sun may struggle beneath a mature live oak. They’re all in Florida.

They don’t support exactly the same plants.

The same principle applies on a residential or commercial property. A landscape may contain sandy full-sun areas, heavily shaded beds, wet depressions and irrigated foundation plantings within a relatively small area.

Native plant selection still requires evaluating:

Sun + soil + drainage + moisture + salt exposure + mature size + irrigation + maintenance

Being native is an advantage when the plant is also suited to those conditions.

1. Coontie

It also has an important ecological relationship with the Atala butterfly, whose caterpillars use coontie as a host plant.

Landscape tip: Coontie’s ability to tolerate different conditions doesn’t mean placement is irrelevant. Consider available light, drainage and mature spread before planting.

2. Firebush

For warm-season color and wildlife activity, native firebush is difficult to overlook.

Its clusters of orange-red tubular flowers can attract hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators throughout the warmer months.

Firebush performs particularly well in sunny locations and can become relatively drought tolerant once established.

It can also become a substantial shrub.

That’s important because putting a naturally large flowering plant into a small space can turn an otherwise low-input choice into something requiring constant pruning.

Landscape tip: Give firebush room to develop. A plant’s mature size matters just as much as its native status.

3. Beautyberry

American beautyberry demonstrates that flowers aren’t the only way a native shrub can contribute seasonal color.

Small flowers are followed by distinctive clusters of bright purple berries arranged along the stems. Those berries can provide food for wildlife while creating a fall display unlike most conventional landscape shrubs.
