August thunderstorms can reveal a lot about a Northeast Florida landscape.

A low spot that seemed perfectly normal during a dry stretch may suddenly hold water. Soil near a downspout may remain saturated long after the rain stops. The bottom of a slope may remain noticeably wetter than the surrounding landscape. And plants that looked healthy earlier in the summer may begin showing signs of stress—not because they’re getting too little water, but because they’re getting too much.

The first instinct is often to ask: How do we get rid of the water? Sometimes that’s exactly the right question. Persistent standing water near a home, erosion, runoff moving toward structures, and chronically flooded turf may indicate a drainage problem that should be corrected.

But not every naturally moist part of a landscape needs to be made completely dry. Sometimes the better question is: Are the plants growing there actually suited to the conditions? Choosing plants capable of tolerating periodically wet soil can turn a troublesome part of the property into an attractive and functional part of the landscape.

Here are 10 plants worth considering for wetter areas of Northeast Florida landscapes.

1. Bald Cypress

Few trees are more closely associated with wet Florida landscapes than bald cypress.This native deciduous conifer naturally grows along rivers, lakes, swamps, and other areas where moisture is plentiful. Its feathery foliage creates a soft appearance during the growing se ason before turning rusty brown and dropping in fall. Bald cypress is especially interesting because it isn’t limited to standing water. Once established, it can adapt to a surprisingly broad range of soil-moisture conditions. Its mature size, however, makes placement extremely important.

Landscape tip: Think long term. Bald cypress can become a very large tree and shouldn’t be treated as a solution for a small wet spot next to a house.

2. Pond Cypress

Pond cypress is another Florida native naturally associated with wetlands and seasonally wet environments. Similar in appearance to bald cypress, it generally has a narrower growth habit and is frequently found around ponds, wet flatwoods, and shallow depressions. For larger properties or naturalistic landscapes with genuinely wet areas, pond cypress can help create a landscape that looks appropriate to the environment rather than one constantly fighting it.

Landscape tip: Cypress trees belong where their mature size and root systems can be accommodated. Consider utilities, structures and long-term landscape development before planting.

3. Swamp Hibiscus

If you want proof that wet areas don’t have to be boring, look at swamp hibiscus. Also known as scarlet rosemallow, this Florida native produces dramatic red flowers that can immediately become a focal point in a summer landscape. It naturally prefers moist to wet soils, making it particularly useful around ponds, drainage areas, rain gardens and other locations where moisture remains available. Its flowers are also attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Landscape tip: Don’t put a moisture-loving plant in an area that dries excessively simply because you like the flower. Match the plant to the hydrology of the site.

4. Swamp Lily

Swamp lily is another Florida native that combines ornamental appeal with an ability to handle moisture. Its strap-like foliage provides strong texture, while distinctive white flowers rise above the leaves during the warm season. In nature, swamp lilies are associated with wetlands, swamps and other moist environments, making them a natural candidate for lower areas of appropriately designed landscapes. They can be especially attractive when planted in groups rather than as isolated specimens.

Landscape tip: Swamp lily and the many ornamental Crinum lilies used in Florida landscapes aren’t necessarily interchangeable. Select the species or cultivar according to the site’s actual conditions.

5. Virginia Sweetspire

Virginia sweetspire offers something different from the tropical-looking plants often associated with wet Florida landscapes. This native shrub produces arching clusters of small white flowers and can tolerate moist soils. Depending on conditions, its foliage can also develop attractive fall coloration. Its ability to tolerate both moisture and some shade makes it useful in transitional locations where trees and drainage patterns create more complicated growing conditions.

Landscape tip: A plant that tolerates wet soil may still have preferences regarding sunlight. Evaluate the entire site rather than solving only one problem.

6. Buttonbush

Buttonbush is a particularly interesting native choice for genuinely moist locations. Its distinctive spherical white flowers almost look like pincushions and attract butterflies, bees and other pollinators. The plant naturally occurs around ponds, wetlands and waterways. Buttonbush can become a substantial shrub, so it works best where it has adequate room to develop. For larger rain gardens, pond edges and naturalized wet areas, it can provide both ornamental and ecological value.

Landscape tip: Allow enough space for its natural form rather than planting it somewhere that will require constant shearing.

7. Fakahatchee Grass

Fakahatchee grass can provide the movement and texture of an ornamental grass while handling conditions associated with Florida landscapes. Its long arching foliage creates a fountain-like form, and mature plants can become quite substantial. It can work particularly well around ponds, drainage features and larger landscape beds where a bold mass of foliage is desirable.

Landscape tip: Mature size matters. Fakahatchee grass can occupy considerably more space than it appears to when newly installed.

8. Soft Rush

Soft rush is particularly well suited to landscapes where water periodically collects. Its upright, cylindrical stems provide a strong architectural contrast to broad-leaved shrubs and spreading groundcovers. It is especially useful around rain gardens, pond edges and shallow drainage areas where the landscape design intentionally accommodates water. Used in masses, rushes can make a drainage feature look like an intentional part of the landscape rather than an engineering afterthought.

Landscape tip: Plants can help integrate a drainage area visually, but they shouldn’t be used to conceal a drainage failure that threatens a structure or other improvements.

9. Blue Flag Iris

For homeowners wanting flowers in a moist area, blue flag iris deserves consideration. Native iris species produce attractive blue-violet flowers above upright foliage and naturally occur in wet environments. Their vertical form can provide a useful contrast along pond margins, rain gardens and moist planting beds. They’re another good example of why a wet area doesn’t necessarily need to be viewed as unusable landscape space.

Landscape tip: Grouping several plants generally creates a stronger visual effect than scattering individual irises throughout a large bed.

10. Pickerelweed

Pickerelweed is for the wetter end of the spectrum. This Florida native produces spikes of blue-purple flowers above broad green leaves and is commonly associated with shallow water and pond margins. The flowers attract pollinators, while the plant itself can contribute to a naturalistic waterside landscape. But this isn’t simply a plant for a bed that stays a little damp after rain. It is much more appropriate for consistently wet areas and shallow-water environments.

Landscape tip: Understanding how wet an area actually stays is just as important as knowing that it gets wet.

There’s a Big Difference Between Moist Soil and a Drainage Problem

This is perhaps the most important distinction in the entire discussion. After a heavy Northeast Florida thunderstorm, some temporary pooling can occur naturally. Low areas collect runoff, soils become saturated and water may take time to infiltrate. That doesn’t automatically mean the property has a serious drainage problem. But water that repeatedly remains against a foundation, floods structures, washes away soil, damages hardscapes or leaves large sections of turf chronically saturated deserves closer attention. Plants aren’t a substitute for correcting those problems. A drainage solution might involve grading, swales, catch basins, underground drainage, downspout management or other measures depending on the property. The objective is to determine where water should go—and where it can safely remain.

How Long Does the Area Stay Wet?

Before selecting plants, observe the property after rainfall.

Does water disappear within a few hours?

Does the soil stay moist for several days?

Does standing water remain for extended periods?

Is the area only wet following major storms, or is it almost always saturated?

Those are very different growing environments. A plant capable of handling occasional wet feet isn’t necessarily an aquatic plant. Likewise, a plant adapted to pond margins may perform poorly in an area that becomes extremely dry between storms. That’s why a generic list of “water-loving plants” doesn’t tell the whole story.

Northeast Florida’s Rainfall Can Create Extremes

One of the interesting challenges of landscaping in Northeast Florida is that the same property can experience opposite moisture conditions. Summer thunderstorms can deliver significant rainfall in a short period. Days later, intense sunshine and high temperatures can begin drying exposed areas quickly. Meanwhile, a low portion of the same property may remain saturated. That means irrigation zones, drainage, and plant selection all need to account for microclimates within the landscape. A plant at the top of a slope may have very different water requirements from one planted 50 feet away at the bottom.

Rain Gardens Can Turn Runoff Into a Landscape Feature

Some wet areas can even become opportunities. A properly designed rain garden temporarily collects stormwater and allows it to infiltrate rather than immediately running off the property. Plants selected for these areas need to tolerate an unusual combination: periodically wet conditions followed by periods of considerably drier soil. That’s different from planting around a permanently wet pond. Rain gardens can also introduce native plants, flowers, ornamental grasses and pollinator habitat into an area that might otherwise be viewed strictly as a drainage problem.

Don’t Automatically Add More Irrigation

Another common mistake is assuming a struggling plant needs more water. Yellowing foliage, leaf drop, and general decline can sometimes be interpreted as drought stress when the underlying problem is actually excessive moisture around the roots. Roots need oxygen as well as water. When soils remain saturated for extended periods, some plants simply aren’t equipped to handle those conditions. Increasing irrigation can make the situation worse. Before changing watering schedules, it’s worth understanding why the plant is struggling.

Right Plant, Right Place Starts With Water

Plant selection isn’t only about flower color, foliage or what looks good at the nursery. It’s about understanding the site. Where does water naturally collect? Where does it drain quickly? Which areas remain moist? Where does roof runoff enter the landscape? How much sunlight does the area receive? How large will the plant eventually become? Those questions should come before choosing the plant. Sometimes drainage needs to be corrected. Sometimes the planting design needs to change. And sometimes an area homeowners have been trying to keep dry is actually an opportunity to create something more interesting by working with the site’s natural conditions.

A successful Northeast Florida landscape doesn’t require every square foot of soil to behave exactly the same way. It requires recognizing those differences and selecting plants—and drainage solutions—that make sense for each part of the property.
