When a longtime Rockaway Sustainable Landscaping client purchased one of Atlantic Beach’s most recognizable homes, our team was excited to help prepare the property for its next chapter. Known locally as the “MAD House,” this one-of-a-kind residence demonstrates how thoughtful landscape improvements can enhance a property without erasing the history and personality that make it special.

What Is the History of the Atlantic Beach MAD House?
The MAD House began as a relatively modest Atlantic Beach cottage constructed in 1953. Its extraordinary appearance developed decades later after local artist Mark Durham purchased the property in 2009 and began transforming it into what he described as a living work of art.
Durham incorporated coastal folk art, sculptural elements and colorful architectural details throughout the property. The distinctive faces built into the porch columns, textured exterior surfaces, painted entrance and unusual landscape features eventually made the house a neighborhood landmark.
Major renovations and an expansion followed around 2017, but the property continued to evolve as an artistic environment. Rather than removing those unusual characteristics, the new homeowner elected to preserve the home’s identity while improving its outdoor areas.
How Did Rockaway Improve the Landscape?
Rockaway’s work focused on practical landscape upgrades that complemented the house without competing with its elaborate artwork.
In the front yard, our crews removed weeds, cleaned and refreshed the existing planting beds, and improved the property’s overall presentation. These landscaping and maintenance services allowed the sculptural façade to remain the visual focus while giving the surrounding landscape a cleaner, more intentional appearance.
In the backyard, crews removed overgrown landscaping that had consumed usable space and made the property more difficult to maintain. After completing the tear-out, Rockaway constructed a new hardscape pad, creating a more functional outdoor area while establishing a foundation for future use.
The project required restraint. A conventional or overly formal landscape could have felt disconnected from the house. Our goal was to improve usability and appearance while respecting the creative environment established by its former owner.
