8-year-old Robin beamed with pride as she helped Dan, from Rockaway Landscaping plant a live oak tree – her prize from the “Beyond Arbor Day” contest hosted by us and the Friends of the Beaches Library. This wasn’t just any tree planting, but one Robin donated to the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) where she’s developed a deep connection.

Robin wasn’t always the confident animal advocate she was today. Initially shy and struggling with reading, she found solace in JHS’s “Positive Reading” program. Here, surrounded by furry friends, she practiced reading aloud, gaining confidence with each wagging tail and purring meow. According to JHS Education Manager Savannah New, Studies show these readings calm the animals and likewise benefit the volunteers’ wellbeing. Robins’ mom Erika Sepega attributed Robin’s improved confidence in reading to the “Positive Reading” program.

Does your child share Robin’s love for animals? The JHS “Positive Reading” program welcomes young hearts. Visit the Jacksonville Humane Society website, www.jaxhumane.org, for information on orientations and other ways to get involved. Remember, every voice, big or small, can make a difference.

From Sand to Seedlings

This Arbor Day, Jacksonville Beach takes a moment to appreciate the silent giants that grace our streets and parks – trees. For 34 years, as Mayor Chris Hoffman proudly stated, Jacksonville Beach has been a Tree City USA, recognizing trees’ crucial role in our collective well-being.

Beyond their undeniable beauty, trees act as nature’s unsung heroes. They cast welcome shade during scorching summers, making Jacksonville Beach a cooler and more comfortable haven. But their benefits extend far beyond offering respite from the sun.

Mayor Hoffman aptly described trees as nature’s water filtration system. They absorb and filter rainwater, replenishing our groundwater and preventing soil erosion. This ensures the stability and health of our local ecosystem, contributing to a thriving environment for all.

In recognition of this invaluable role, Jacksonville Beach has long been a champion of responsible tree-planting initiatives. The city’s dedicated program and efforts in parks and green spaces prioritizes planting low-maintenance species that thrive in our unique climate.

Rockaway Landscaping joins Mayor Hoffman in encouraging tree planting  this Arbor Day in Jacksonville Beach. Let’s plant a seed of hope for a greener, healthier future.

In the heart of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, a group of dads is making waves not just as fathers, but as community builders. The Seabroz dads, a newly formed initiative at Seabreeze Elementary School, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, is on a mission to fill a void, bringing more male role models into the lives of students and fostering a vibrant school environment.

SeaBroz Seabreeze Elementary School Jacksonville Beach Florida“We noticed a few years ago that there weren’t as many dads involved as we would have liked,” explains Keith Luber, a Seabroz member. “That’s when we knew we had to take action.”

Their first spark was a simple gathering in the school cafeteria with six dads. What started as a small initiative quickly grew, fueled by the power of community. Today, the Seabroz boast a mailing list of 75 members, all eager to contribute their time and talents.

Their inaugural event, “Night of Lights,” is a testament to their dedication. This festive celebration brought the whole community together for an evening of twinkling lights, holiday cheer, and most importantly, connection. Rockaway & Burghardt Christmas Tradition were honored to support the event with the Christmas tree as the centerpiece, ready to be illuminated by the combined efforts of students, parents, and Seabroz alike.

But the impact of the Seabroz goes far beyond festive nights. “It’s about more than just events,” Keith emphasizes. “It’s about building relationships, providing support, and being that positive male presence that many kids lack.” He recalls his own childhood, the void left by his father’s absence, and how community figures like coaches and teachers stepped in to fill that gap. “Every kid needs a male role model in their life, someone they can look up to,” he says. “That’s what we’re striving to be.”

And the ripple effect is already spreading. The Seabroz are reaching out to neighboring schools, offering guidance and support to help establish similar groups. Their collaboration with the Carver Center promises to extend their reach beyond the school walls, further enriching the Jacksonville Beach community.

The Seabroz story is one of inspiration, dedication, and the transformative power of community. By harnessing the strength of their network, they’re not just illuminating Seabreeze Elementary, but also paving the way for a brighter future, one filled with hope, support, and the guiding light of positive male role models. For more information on Seabroz dads contact Keith Luber at seabroz.seabreeze@gmail.com.

Rockaway Sustainable Landscaping offered the Beaches Museum a $5,000 matching contribution towards landscape enhancements, celebrating ten years of providing them landscape maintenance services. Besides the long-standing relationship, Rockaway founders, the Burghardt brothers Greg and Brian, strongly support the beach communities and institutions. The Beaches Museum was established by the Beaches Area Historical Society, which celebrates and preserves the history of Mayport, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Palm Valley, and Ponte Vedra.

This campaign would not have been possible without the strong support and coordination with Chris Hoffman, Beaches Museum Executive Director and Jacksonville Beach Mayor. Greg Burghardt, Rockaway president, and Chris shook on the concept after shooting a promotional video tour of the Beaches Museum. See below.

The campaign kicked off on August 21, 2023. Contributions were made through the Beaches Museum website. The event’s finale was the evening of the Beaches Legends at Sawgrass Country Club on September 15, 2023. Chris Hoffman announced the result of the campaign on Facebook. Drum roll please…

“We were so happy to have Greg Burghardt and Landscape Architect Kathleen Burson of Rockaway, Inc. join us for a check presentation for a recent matching grant campaign,” Beaches Museum. “In total, $17,000 was raised to re-landscape around the Museum and the new sign that will be installed in early November. The Board, including outgoing members “Doc” Renuart, Margie Horvath, Claudia Estes, and Bill Lynch and incoming members Maggie Fitzroy, Allison Lauer, Brenda Smith, and Joanna Stachura, enjoyed a tour and discussion of the plans to make the landscaping around the Museum Florida friendly, sustainable, and beautiful! Keep an eye out for our new sign coming in early November!”

We at Rockaway are so pleased with the results and thankful for Chris, the Board, and everyone who contributed!

In the video below, Greg and Kathleen discussed the planned improvements after the October Board Meeting.
